Architecture in Nagaland

Nagaland's architecture is rooted in its many tribal communities, each with distinct house forms. Villages were traditionally built on hilltops for defence, with houses of timber, bamboo and thatch, and many have a morung, a dormitory for young men decorated with carved posts showing hornbills, mithun and other motifs. Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, the venue of the Hornbill Festival, brings together traditional houses of the major tribes, which makes it a rich field study site. The Catholic Cathedral in Kohima draws on the form of a traditional Naga house, while the Kohima War Cemetery is laid out on terraced slopes. In Dimapur, the Kachari ruins feature carved stone pillars. Students usually look to B.Arch colleges in other states and to national counselling through JoSAA and CSAB.
