Architecture in Manipur

Manipur sits in an oval valley ringed by hills, and its architecture reflects both Meitei valley culture and the hill traditions of Naga and Kuki communities. Traditional Meitei houses face east, with timber frames, mud plastered walls and steep thatched roofs. Kangla, the historic seat of Manipuri kings in the heart of Imphal, holds gateways, ruins and sacred structures beside the Imphal River. The Shree Govindajee Temple, with its twin domes, is a major place of worship. On Loktak Lake, fishing families live in phumshangs, small huts built on floating mats of vegetation called phumdis.
