Architecture in Lakshadweep
Lakshadweep is a group of low coral atolls in the Arabian Sea, and its architecture is shaped by scarce land, fresh water and building materials. Older homes were built with cut coral stone and lime, with coconut timber framing and roofs thatched with coconut fronds, while newer houses mostly use concrete. On Kavaratti, the Ujra Mosque is admired for its carved wooden ceiling. For a design student, the islands are a lesson in building lightly: shaded verandahs, cross ventilation for the humid heat, raised plinths against storm surges, and care for a fragile reef ecosystem. There is no B.Arch college on the islands, so students usually look to mainland colleges, such as NIT Calicut in Kerala, and to national counselling through JoSAA and CSAB for JEE Paper 2.
