Architecture in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir has a rich tradition of timber architecture adapted to cold winters and frequent earthquakes. Old Srinagar uses two clever systems: taq, where timber bands are laced into brick or stone masonry, and dhajji dewari, a timber frame filled with brick or rubble, both known for performing well in tremors. Interiors often feature khatamband ceilings made of small interlocking wooden pieces in geometric patterns. Landmarks include the wooden Khanqah of Shah Hamadan on the Jhelum, the Jamia Masjid with its forest of deodar columns, and the terraced Mughal gardens of Shalimar and Nishat beside Dal Lake. In Jammu, the Mubarak Mandi palace complex blends Rajput, Mughal and European styles. Many aspirants also look to B.Arch colleges in neighbouring states, such as NIT Hamirpur, through JoSAA and CSAB counselling.
