Port Blair, officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024, grew as a British penal settlement. The Cellular Jail is the key study: a radial plan whose brick wings fanned out from a central watchtower, so that the cells of one wing faced the back of the next. Several wings were later demolished, but the surviving ones still show the plan. Across the harbour, Ross Island (now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep) holds the ruins of the old administrative headquarters, a church and bungalows slowly being overtaken by tree roots. In the town, timber houses on raised plinths, steep roofs and deep verandahs respond to heavy rain and high humidity, and the hilly site gives layered views over the bay.
