Studying for architecture in Leh

Leh is a high-altitude cold desert town, and its buildings respond directly to thin air, strong sun and severe winters. Leh Palace, built by the Namgyal dynasty in the seventeenth century, rises in tapering mud-brick and stone storeys above the old town, with Namgyal Tsemo Gompa on the ridge behind it. Houses in the old town use thick sun-dried brick walls, small openings and flat roofs of poplar and willow beams covered with twigs and earth. The white Shanti Stupa stands on a hill facing the palace. Monasteries such as Thiksey and Hemis, a short drive away, cling to rocky slopes. Leh is an outstanding place to study passive solar design and vernacular earth construction.

Ladakh has no separate B.Arch counselling, so students apply to colleges in other states and through national counselling. NIT, IIIT and SPA seats are filled through JoSAA, with CSAB rounds after it.
