How to read this syllabus
The Council of Architecture publishes the NATA syllabus as a flat list. That hides which topics actually carry marks in the paper. Based on the last 5 years of paper analysis (2021 to 2025), this guide ranks every topic by approximate weightage so you know where to spend study time.
High-weightage topics (60% of marks)
These topics together account for roughly 120 of the 200 marks. Master them first.
1. Composition and 3D Drawing (30 to 40 marks)
- Combining given 2D shapes into a 3D scene
- Light and shadow rendering on solids
- Perspective drawing (1-point, 2-point, 3-point)
- Free-hand sketching of objects from imagination
2. Mathematics (25 to 30 marks)
- Algebra: quadratic equations, sequences and series
- Coordinate geometry: straight lines, conic sections, basic 3D coordinates
- Trigonometry: identities, heights and distances
- Calculus: differentiation and integration basics, application problems
- Statistics: mean, median, mode, standard deviation
3. General Aptitude and Logical Reasoning (25 to 30 marks)
- Series completion (number, letter, mixed)
- Coding and decoding
- Blood relations and direction sense
- Syllogism and analogy
- Data interpretation: pie charts, bar graphs, tables
4. Architectural Awareness (15 to 20 marks)
- Famous buildings: Taj Mahal, Sagrada Familia, Burj Khalifa, Louvre, Sydney Opera House, Falling Water, Notre Dame, India Gate
- Famous architects: Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Zaha Hadid, B.V. Doshi, Charles Correa, I.M. Pei
- Building materials: concrete, steel, brick, glass, sustainable materials
- Indian architectural styles: Dravidian, Indo-Saracenic, Mughal, Colonial, Modernist
Medium-weightage topics (30% of marks)
These contribute around 60 marks. Cover them after the high-weightage topics.
5. Visual Composition (15 to 20 marks)
- Colour theory: primary, secondary, complementary, warm and cool palettes
- Balance, symmetry, contrast in composition
- Figure-ground relationship
- Pattern, texture, rhythm
6. Spatial Reasoning (10 to 15 marks)
- Mirror images
- Paper folding and cutting
- Embedded figures
- Block counting in stacks
7. Verbal Ability (10 to 15 marks)
- Reading comprehension passages on architecture, design, or urban planning
- Synonyms and antonyms
- Sentence completion
8. General Knowledge (5 to 10 marks)
- Current affairs related to construction, urban planning, sustainability
- Recent architectural news (Pritzker Prize winners, major projects)
Lower-weightage topics (10% of marks)
Around 20 marks total. Do not skip but do not over-invest either.
9. Aesthetic Sensitivity (around 10 marks)
- Picking the better-composed image from a set
- Identifying the artistic style of a given image
10. Sketching from Memory (around 5 marks)
- Drawing a familiar object (chair, lamp, water bottle) without reference
11. Environmental Awareness (around 5 marks)
- Sustainable design principles
- Environmental impact of construction
- Climate-responsive architecture
Recommended study order
- Weeks 1 to 4: Composition and 3D drawing, mathematics (high weightage, foundation skills)
- Weeks 5 to 8: General aptitude, architectural awareness (high weightage, knowledge-heavy)
- Weeks 9 to 12: Visual composition, spatial reasoning, verbal ability (medium weightage)
- Weeks 13 to 14: Aesthetic sensitivity, environmental awareness, sketching from memory (lower weightage)
- Weeks 15 to 16: Full-length mock tests, weak-area focus, revision
