NATA vs JEE Paper 2: Which One Should You Choose for B.Arch?

Neram Classes21 May 2026

Two exams, one degree

If you want to study architecture in India, you have two main entrance exam options: NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) or JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch). Most aspirants face a confusing situation where coaches, parents, and senior students all give different advice. This post breaks down the decision factually.

Side-by-side comparison

| Aspect | NATA | JEE Paper 2A |

|---|---|---|

| Conducting body | Council of Architecture (CoA) | National Testing Agency (NTA) |

| Frequency | 2 phases (April to June, August) | 2 sessions (January, April) |

| Total marks | 200 | 400 |

| Sections | Diagrammatic, numerical and verbal reasoning, inductive and situational reasoning | Mathematics, aptitude test, drawing test |

| Mode | Online (with online drawing) | Online for MCQs, offline pen-and-paper for drawing |

| Eligibility | 10+2 with PCM (50% aggregate from 2024 onward) | 10+2 with PCM (50% aggregate) |

| Target colleges | State institutes, private colleges, deemed universities | NITs, IIITs, SPAs, GFTIs (premier government colleges) |

| Score validity | 1 academic year | 1 academic year (best of 2 sessions) |

Where each exam takes you

NATA route opens

  • Anna University School of Architecture and Planning (Chennai)
  • JJ College of Architecture (Mumbai)
  • CEPT University (Ahmedabad, requires NATA + interview)
  • BMS College of Engineering (Bangalore)
  • MEASI Academy of Architecture (Chennai)
  • Most state engineering universities with a B.Arch department
  • Around 250 to 300 CoA-approved private architecture colleges
  • JEE Paper 2A route opens

  • National Institutes of Technology (NITs) with B.Arch programs: NIT Trichy, NIT Calicut, NIT Raipur, NIT Hamirpur
  • Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPAs): SPA Delhi, SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada
  • Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) with architecture
  • Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)
  • IIT B.Arch programs (Roorkee, Kharagpur) require JEE Advanced + AAT after JEE Main
  • Which is harder?

Difficulty is not directly comparable, but in practice:

  • JEE Paper 2A mathematics is significantly harder than NATA mathematics (JEE Main level vs school level)
  • NATA aptitude is broader and tests more dimensions (general knowledge, verbal, visual)
  • JEE Paper 2A drawing is shorter (2 questions in 30 minutes) but graded more strictly
  • NATA drawing has more questions over more time but with online input
  • Which should you take?

    Take only NATA if:

  • You are weak in JEE-level mathematics
  • Your top colleges are state institutes, JJ Mumbai, CEPT, or strong private colleges
  • You started prep less than 12 months before the exam
  • You want maximum attempts (NATA gives 3 over two phases)
  • Take only JEE Paper 2A if:

  • You are strong in JEE-level mathematics
  • Your dream colleges are SPA Delhi, NIT Trichy, NIT Calicut, IIT B.Arch
  • You have 12+ months of preparation runway
  • You also plan to attempt JEE Advanced for IIT B.Arch
  • Take both (most common path):

  • You want NIT/SPA as backup with state institutes as safety
  • You can manage the combined syllabus (about 70% overlap)
  • You have at least 12 months of prep time
  • You have access to coaching that covers both
  • How combined prep works

NATA and JEE Paper 2 share most of the syllabus: drawing, aptitude, architectural awareness, and general mathematics. The differences are:

  • JEE Paper 2 has harder mathematics (JEE Main level)
  • JEE Paper 2 has less aptitude variety than NATA
  • JEE drawing is offline, NATA drawing is online
  • Our [2-year NATA program](/nata-online-coaching) covers both exams together because of this overlap. Students target NIT Trichy via JEE Paper 2 as their first choice, with state institutes via NATA as backup.

    Cost comparison

    | Item | NATA prep | JEE Paper 2A prep | Both |

    |---|---|---|---|

    | Exam fee | ~Rs. 2,000 per attempt | ~Rs. 2,000 per attempt | ~Rs. 4,000 |

    | Coaching fee at Neram | Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,000 | Rs. 25,000 | Rs. 30,000 (combined 2-year) |

    | Study material | Rs. 3,000 | Rs. 5,000 | Rs. 5,000 (overlapping) |

Combined prep is more economical and gives more admission options.

    Common myths

  • **"JEE B.Arch is harder so the colleges are better."** Partially true. NITs and SPAs are top-tier, but a strong state institute (JJ Mumbai, CEPT, Anna University SAP) is also a great B.Arch destination.
  • **"You cannot prepare for both without losing focus."** False. The syllabi overlap heavily. Most NIT B.Arch students at our institute clear NATA as well.
  • **"NATA drawing is easier than JEE drawing."** Not quite. NATA has more drawing questions (longer total time but more frequent context switches). JEE drawing is shorter and stricter. Both need daily practice.
  • Final recommendation

If you have 18+ months and clear NIT/SPA ambition, take both. If you have less than 12 months or weak JEE-level mathematics, focus on NATA and target state institutes. Either way, start drawing practice on day 1.
